SPRING PROGRAMME 2017
PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
As I write this message, the end of the Autumn Term approaches and I and all the committee send our best wishes for Christmas and for a very happy and healthy New Year. The Spring Programme is now complete. We hope it will have something to interest everyone and that as many members as possible will be able to attend.
On Tuesday 24th January, it will once again be our turn to entertain the Lady Mayoress of Leeds to afternoon tea. As usual, this will be held at University House from 1.00pm to 3.00pm. It is always a most enjoyable event and we shall use the occasion to present our contribution to the Lord Mayor’s Charity Appeal from the money raised at the Christmas Coffee Morning. This year the Lord Mayor’s Charity is divided between Epilepsy UK and Heart Research UK.
On Thursday 23rd February, we will have a talk by Dr.Geoffrey Tabbron on the History of The City of London Livery Companies. Dr Tabbron will tell us about the origins of the livery companies, their important place in the life of the City of London, and especially of the work they do throughout the country to support education and training and to maintain standards.
On Wednesday 22nd March, we will have the annual Departmental visit. During our visit to Aviation Studies last year, we received an invitation to visit the Institute of Robotics this year and we have been delighted to accept. The Institute of Robotics works within a number of the engineering departments in the Faculty of Engineering. It is a subject which touches a wide range of disciplines and it promises to be a very interesting afternoon.
On Sunday 2nd April, we will have a slight departure from our normal routine and in place of the evening Spring Buffet we will hold a Sunday Carvery Lunch. This change to the regular programme was discussed and approved at the Annual General Meeting in June. The event will be held at University House from 12.30pm to 3.00pm and will comprise a wine reception followed by a two course Carvery Lunch Menu. We hope that this new venture will be well supported.
Just a gentle reminder that subscriptions are now due and should be paid by the end of the Autumn Term. If you have not done so already, details of how to pay are shown on the website.
Finally, it has been brought to the attention of the committee that some of our members are having difficulty attending events because of problems with transport, especially public transport. If you need a lift, or you are in a position to offer someone a lift, do please get in touch with either Gill Lydon or myself and we will try to arrange something for you.
