Summer 2017

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

As I write this message, the first day of ‘Spring’ has dawned with torrential rain and the forecast of snow later in the week! However, undeterred, I look forward to the coming of summer and the ULLC Summer programme.
Our Summer Outing takes place on Tuesday 9th May and will be to Ampleforth Abbey and Grounds, which is situated in an area of outstanding natural beauty.
On arrival at the Abbey we will enjoy tea/coffee and home-made biscuits. This will be followed by the ‘Blossom’ Tour, when we will have a guided tour of the Orchards, Cider Mill and other facilities. We will learn how the monks make their cider and other commodities from their own home-grown apples (they grow over 40 varieties!) and, for those who wish to do so, there will be an opportunity to sample the Monk’s award winning produce.
Following the tour we will have a lunch of soup, sandwiches, home-made apple cake, tea or coffee. After lunch, there will be time to explore the rest of the site. You may wish to visit the Visitors’ Centre, Shop and, of course, the world famous Abbey itself, perhaps to see the ‘Mousey’ Thompson carvings, or simply to enjoy the atmosphere of what is a most unique and inspiring building. There will also be time to visit the Tea Room for that all important ‘cuppa’ before we return to Leeds.
Please note that we need to leave St. Chad’s by no later than 9.15am. For those coming to St. Chad’s by car, we have arranged free parking in the Church Hall car park. Please park against the back wall, adjacent to the Petrol Station.
On Thursday 15th June, the Annual Garden party will take place at the home of Gill and John Lydon. We are grateful to them both for generously agreeing to host the garden party. Hopefully, it will be a warm and sunny day and as many members as possible will be able to attend.
As usual, we end the Summer Programme with the AGM on Wednesday 28th June.
I have enjoyed my two years as President immensely and I would like to place on record my thanks to all the members of the committee for their support, guidance and friendship throughout my term of office. My thanks go also to all the Club members who have attended the events and made them so successful.
