Summer Outing
Thursday 15th May
The summer outing was fully booked.
Hoghton Tower (click this title for a link to its website) near Preston, has been the ancestral home of the de Hoghton family since 1103. It is the only true baronial hall in Lancashire and the place where it has been suggested that Shakespeare worked two years as a tutor. Full of historical interest, the "sleep over" for several kings and a queen and featured in Michael Portillo's Railway Journeys, it was, more recently, where Derek Jacobi and Ann Reid filmed scenes from Last Tango in Halifax.
The Hoghton Tower visit included a comprehensive and fascinating tour of the building, the coach, entrance fee and a lunch at mid-day of soup and a sandwich selection, freshly-made scones served with whipped cream and strawberries and a choice of coffee or tea. It was a great success.
Our thanks to President Moira, Treasurer Angie and Events Secretary Joan, who organised this delightful visit.
